Spiritism’s Inroads among us—a temcat series

5: A Sample Frog Party

"My message to you is: No longer consent to listen without protest to the perversion of truth." Selected Messages Book 1, Pg. 196

This was sent out in a newsletter from a Christian Radio station in Jan. 1995; it is a good account of a charismatic occurrence and we will use it to look at characteristics of these events in the light of Scriptures. I will present the article in its entirety, and will interpose comments in italics:

Dear friend of Christian FM 92;

I had already put the finishing touches on my first letter of 1995. I really liked it. It was full of optimism and inspirational resolutions for the New Year. It will never make it to the printer. Instead I am compelled to offer you a testimony and witness as to a most remarkable day. I pray that it will serve to encourage those who seek God and terrify those who oppose Him.

(Note the desire to ‘terrify, typical of the ‘arbitrary force’ concept of God promoted by Satan. It is not God’s wish to terrify people into serving Him—if it was, He could have done it long ago. In fact the very reason we have this Great Controversy going on in this world, is because God did NOT want a universe to serve Him out of fear.)

January 6, 1995 began in a rather ordinary way. It was Friday and it has been a busy week but I was looking forward to a slow day. As I was leaving the house I actually told my wife, "There’s not much on my calendar, I may try to take the afternoon off and come home early."

I had agreed to interview a pastor from St. Louis, Randy Clark, that morning. Randy was the guest speaker at the tabernacle church’s renewal services nightly and since the ‘Tab’ is a good friend of FM 92 and many other area churches were participating in the meetings, we had decided to clear a slot on the morning show for a brief interview.

My guest was one of the leaders of the so-called Toronto revival. I had read about the Toronto meetings, but frankly, I’ve heard a lot of revival rumors over the years and learned not to pay much attention. Normally I don’t do interviews myself but I was feeling cautious and let the morning guys know I’d be there.

(Notice already the ‘ground work’ of the devil to set up a situation where he could pull this thing off. If the boss had not have been involved then decisions to allow what followed would have been hampered.)

The interview was innocent enough at first; the subject turned to a discussion of the Holy Spirit’s manifest presence in a meeting, as opposed to His presence that dwells within our hearts always. Rather suddenly something began to happen in the control room. It began with Greg; he was seated behind me listening and for shuddering sobs that he attempted to muffle with his hand. It was hard to ignore and Randy paused in mid sentence to comment, "You can’t really se him but God is really dealing with the fellow behind you right now."

I looked over my shoulder just in time to see Greg loosing control; he stood up only to crash to the floor directly in front of the console, where he lay shaking for several minutes.

(Now, although we do have incidences in the Bible and SOP where people when confronted with a direct view of a Holy being or the close presence of the Holy Sprit, have fallen to their faces in helplessness. But lets look at this; the Bible Prophets, such as Isaiah, Daniel, and John, when receiving a vision of Christ, report falling to their faces in helplessness and great humility and Daniel said that he did not breath. In each case the persons involved were either directly or indirectly seeking the Lord at the time of the vision.

Ellen White’s own visions were as above; also in her visions she almost always began with a joyful cry of "Glory! Glory!" while her face shown with holy radiance. The incidences mentioned in the Spirit of Prophecy of people ‘Slain in the Spirit’, were in people who had already listened to, or read a presentation of Bible truth, and it had moved them to repentance. They were voluntarily seeking with great earnestness for forgiveness and assurance of acceptance from Jesus. They were often pleading and weeping BEFORE the prostration occurred, during the true Holy Spirit prostration, they were not weeping or shaking, but either quiet or filled with joy, praising the Lord. Their faces were radiant; they did not show fear and terror.

The most important thing to note here is that God does not impose Himself on people who are just doing their job, like this man was, and not actively engaged in seeking Him. This kind of thing again reflects this ‘force’ mentality that is a trademark of spiritualism though it masquerades in subtle ways.) Note that it mentions that this man ‘lost control of himself’. Brothers and sisters, Jesus died on the cross to allow man that priceless gift, the right of free CHOICE! He never forces us and makes us loose control against our will. This is a clear mark of demonic performances.)

I don’t know if you have ever tried to conduct a radio interview in such circumstances, but let me assure you, I never have. I was mortified, we have always attempted to avoid any extremes at FM 92, so it was difficult to explain to our listeners what was happening.

I had always known Greg to act like a professional, so I knew something was seriously going on. I did my best to recover the interview under the embarrassing circumstances; I thanked the guest and wrapped it up, and thought of ways to kill Greg later.

(Interesting comment from someone who claimed to be a born-again Christian!)

And when we had a guest minister in the station we ask him to pray for the staff. Before Randy Clark left, we asked him to say a word of prayer. We formed a circle and began to pray for the staff one by one. My eyes were shut but I heard a thud and opened them to see Bart M___ prostrate on the floor. He had fallen forward on his face. What amazed me was that Bart was known to be openly skeptical. He simply did not accept such things.

(Forming circles is spiritualistic, although I would not go so far as to say we should never pray in a circle—I do believe we should not go out of our way to do so, and as ‘nice’ as it may seem, holding hands in prayer is NOT backed up by inspiration and will tend to focus the mind horizontally to the group rather than vertically to God.

Now notice here, it is the person that is known to be a sceptic that is first afflicted. Again this is NOT the way of God to impose upon someone, who has chosen to distance himself from God, in such a way. HOWEVER, the ones that are easiest for Satan to take control of, are those that do not have any close relationship to God as a protection to them from his interference.

The others, that may have more of a heavenly guard, can be reached as they see what is happening and CHOOSE to open themselves to it, believing that it is something special from God and not wanting to be left out.

Singling out people and praying for them one by one is sometimes used in group control as a subtle form of manipulation. Again I am not saying that people should never be prayed for by name—but the wise will understand what I am referring to.)

Within seconds, another, and another staff person went down. Even those that remained standing were clearly shaken. When they prayed for me, I did not fall down; what did happen was an electric sensation shot down my right arm and my right hand began to tremble uncontrollably. My heart pounded as I became aware of the powerful sense of what can only be called God’s manifest presence. Remember, our staff is not primarily charismatic. We are Episcopalian, Nazarene, Evangelical, Pentecostal and a couple of us not quite sure.

While personally associated with an Assembly of God church, I am quite skeptic when it comes to weird stuff. I don’t watch many evangelists on TV because too often I’m turned off by what I see. This was completely new to us. Randy was scheduled elsewhere so after just a few minutes of prayer, he thanked me graciously and left quickly.

(Here again we see people being ‘taken over’ against their will. These people, although they were co-operating in being prayed for, had not sought God themselves but were experiencing this as a Minister, known to be involved in charismatic occurrences, prayed for and touched them.

There is no precedent for this sort of thing either in the Bible or SOP, nowhere that we see people being prayed for by someone else and collapsing into trembling incoherency. In the Bible we see people, not being prayed for by ministers, but being PREACHED to and then, themselves doing the praying as their hearts are awakened to seek the Lord.

All this business of mass prayer and people approaching some ‘man of God’ to be ‘prayed for’, and receive some sort of ‘blessing’ has its roots in the pagan worship of avatars, gurus and mystics, people who supposedly have special powers that they can place on others at will. It has no place in Biblical Christianity.

It is not necessary for people to go to any particular place to find God, again any individual can reach out to God in any place just as well as in any other place. In Scripture, the only reason for gathering together was to hear someone teach or preach the Word, or to join in community worship, not to ‘receive the Lord.’

So some will say, what about when the apostles laid their hands on the new believers in Samaria and they received the spirit? Well, what about that? We have only two incidents in the scriptures that talk about this--and in each case it was connected with a baptism that had failed to be conducted in the name of all three of the Heavenly Dignitaries, when this discrepancy was corrected by earnest prayer, the promised blessing was bestowed. Notice:

"Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost." Acts 8:15

Note that it does not say they fell backwards or collapsed into trembling, gibbering heaps! The other incident says they spake in tongues [other languages] and prophesied [preached]; no shaking and falling backward here either.

However, there was someone present at that incident in Acts 8, who saw a great opportunity to use the true gift of the Holy Spirit as a means of getting famous. It was Simon Magus, the sorcerer, who was baptized with the others. He wanted to be able to put his hands on anybody he wanted to and they receive the ‘power’! Just like these modern charismatics are doing. He was told his money would perish with him. He then asked the Apostles to ‘pray for him’. So here we see the kind of spiritualistic mind who thinks in these ways. The real Holy Spirit is very selective about who he comes to.)

Our staff remained in the control room staring at each other wide-eyed and hovering over Bart who still appeared unconscious on the floor. He was completely immobile for over half an hour. There was a sweet atmosphere of worship in the room, so I told someone to put one of those integrative worship CDs on the air while we continued to pray together.

I thought the atmosphere would abate after a few minutes and return to normal, but instead our prayers grew more and more intense. The room became charged in a way I simply cannot describe. After an hour of this we realized that it was ten thirty, the time we normally share our listeners needs in prayers.

(The spirits that had come to the station with the charismatic had remained and were in charge of affairs.)

I switched on the mike and found myself praying that God would touch every listener in a personal way. After prayer, with great hesitation I added, "This morning God has really been touching our staff so we have been spending the morning praying together. If you are in a situation right now where you’re facing a desperate need, just drop by our studios this morning and we’ll take a minute to pray with you."

This was the first time we’d ever made such an invitation. This is where everything went haywire. Within a few minutes a few listeners began to arrive. The first person I prayed with was a tall man who shared with me some tremendous needs he was facing. I told him I would agree with him in prayer.

(Here we see this man, who had experienced the sensation of ‘electricity’ striking his arm and setting it shaking, (again no Biblical precedent for this) he is now saying and doing things that he had no intention or plan to do. The ideas are being placed there in his mind.)

As I prayed for his needs a voice in my head was saying, ‘It’s a shame you don’t operate in a real spiritual gift of power. Here’s a man who really needs to here from God and you’ve got nothing worth giving him.’ I continued to pray but I was struggling. I reached up with my right hand and touched his shoulder when suddenly he shook and flumped to the floor. He lay there without moving for over two hours. I was shocked and shaken.

(Here the ‘spirit’ shames the man into trying to act like a charismatic and lay on hands; then it quickly takes advantage of the attempt and controls the other person, causing him to collapse.

Several questions arise here; notice the words of this spirit to the radio manager, "You have nothing worth giving him." Now this man had responded to the related story of the man’s problems by offering to pray WITH him; to ‘agree with him in prayer’. Now brothers and sisters, this is Biblical! We are told to pray together, and ‘where two of you agree on something it will be done for you of your Father in heaven’.[see Matt.18:19] This man was offering to do for the other just what the Bible says we should do for one another, and yet the lying spirit said ‘You have nothing worth giving him.’ It is belittling the Biblical directions given us by Jesus Himself!

There is a spiritual battle taking place here, and the man testifies to it as he says ‘I was struggling’, why was he struggling? It appears that the frog spirits wanted him to work for them but he was still a bit too tuned in to what the Bible directs us to do. Because he believed this was the Holy Spirit, and he wanted to co-operate, he finally dismissed the real Holy Spirit, who was trying to keep him with the Word, and opened up to co-operate with the frog spirit. It wasn’t slow to jump in and take over!

Another question that arises in the minds of those that still have a mind to think straight, what earthly good did it do this poor troubled man for him to lie helpless on the floor for two hours?? Did it solve his problems? No. Did it help him to know the Bible promises that he could take hold of? No. The Radio manager had intended to pray in an intelligent way for the real problems of this person, but all that ended, as the man collapsed into senselessness. More on this later.)

Two others had arrived at this point, staff members were praying with them. Suddenly they began weeping uncontrollably and slumped to the floor. The scene was repeated a dozen times in the next few minutes.

It didn’t matter who did the praying, whenever we asked of the Lord He immediately responded with a visible power and the same manifestations occurred. I didn’t know whether to be terrified or thrilled but clearly something completely unusual was going on.

(It didn’t matter whom they were praying for or who did the praying. Remember— some of these staff people were sceptics; many of the people who came in were unbelievers. Also notice the overall ecumenical slant in this incident as the so-called holy spirit makes no difference in what belief structure those laying on the hands had.

Again we see the weeping, collapsing, out of control thing, which really can do no one any good at all, as no learning and decision-making takes place. The man says he didn’t know whether to be terrified or thrilled; clearly he still had doubts that this was really what it was claiming to be, but he had no criteria to judge it by, he had chosen to step outside what biblical guidance-structure that he did have, when the frog-spirit shamed him out of it.)

A young man cautiously entered the room and began to tell us he was just happening to be scanning the radio dial when he heard something about prayer. He reported that he was immediately overcome with conviction. Years before he’d been contemplating going into the ministry and he’d attended a couple of years at a Christian college but he had since strayed from God. As a chill of conviction swept him, he felt God suddenly telling him it was now or never. He drove to the station. We prayed with him to receive Christ as Lord and afterward he too slumped to the floor.

(Now consider, why was it important that this man come to the station and have someone else pray for him to receive Jesus? Could he not have knelt down where he was and communicated with Jesus by himself? Of course he could have! The Bible doesn’t tell us we have to have someone pray for us before we come to Jesus. BUT that would not have worked for the big publicity stunt the devil was putting on.)

One by one they came; we continued to play praise-oriented music and every hour, sometimes on the half hour, we’d invite people to come. Fairly early in all this we ran out of room. The radio station floor was wall-to-wall bodies; some weeping, some shaking, some completely still. People reported that it was like a heavy lead apron had been placed over them. They were unable to get up all they could do was worship God.

(Note the reference to ‘Praise’ oriented music; I don’t know what the music was like, but this description usually refers to prominent beat music. There is no message being presented to appeal to people to make any commitment to the Lord, just the music and the power of the spirits causing sensations and feelings.

As for the ‘held down’ sensation, I know of people who have reported that this is exactly what demon oppression feels like. People who have been harassed by demon spirits tell how they have felt a weight on their chest like something sitting on them. Also, what value to our loving heavenly Father would such forced ‘worship’ be? How would you like to see your child in a straight jacket being forced to tell you they love you?)

Fortunately our offices are inside the complex at Central Assembly, so when the crowd began to grow we moved across into the church leaving the radio station literally wall to wall with seekers. Some teachers at __Christian School had heard what was happening and asked us to pray for certain children they had been bringing in the room. As we prayed for the kids, many began to shake and fall on the floor. Some would begin to utter praises to God, others lay completely immobile for periods of over half an hour.

If you’ve ever tried to make a seven-year-old lay still, you know it’s a miracle. A few simply experienced nothing at all. By now I was convinced that we were experiencing a bona fide movement of God. I had read about such manifestations experiences being common in the revival meetings of great men like Jonathan Edwards and John Wesley. I’d also read of the great campmeeting revivals of the early 1800s where thousands upon thousands experienced being slain. But I never imagined that I would really live to see it.

(Those old revival meetings were not without their emotional hype either and no doubt some of the demonstrations were initiated by the same spirits we see active today. Especially someone like Jonathan Edwards, whose discourses on hell fire, rival some of our worst horror movies. Emotional people would easily go into hysterics at such descriptions. I would fail to see how the real Holy Spirit could put His approval to such meetings.

Wesley was different, from what little I know about his meetings, people were slain in the spirit after they themselves began to pray earnest prayers of repentance at altar calls following Biblical preaching services. It is easy for people who have not carefully noted the descriptions of such revivals to just jump to conclusions and say it is the same, when they don’t really know that. They forget the crafty tricks of the great deceiver, and many don’t believe he even exists.)

The crowd continued to grow and lines began to form. The power of God continued to fall on those coming. It was almost like being in a dream. I would look up and see our staff members, eyes red, face puffy, hands trembling with the fire in their eyes and the power of God upon them. I couldn’t believe it was the same people I knew and worked with. In a matter of hours something we never ever dreamed of, much less aspired to, was happening

(Because there is a power there, they think it has to be from God, but notice the description, eyes red, face puffy and FIRE in their eyes! that glaring fiery look in the eyes is a perfect description of a person possessed or controlled by a demon. You do not find this in SOP descriptions of people receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, rather there is a brightness about them, a gentle sweetness and joyfulness of expression. Neither is the receiving of the Holy Spirit something that is passed from person to person, willy-nilly like a contagious disease. To receive the Holy Spirit for real, required deep personal heart searching and seeking the Lord.)

The floor in front of the sanctuary was soon covered with men and women, boys and girls. The aisles began to fill as we were pushing aside chairs for more floor space. Usually one of our staff would catch the person as he fell, but on quite a few occasions we were caught by surprise and people fell hard on the floor. Frankly, we had no idea what we were doing. I am not sure I wanted to learn.

At some point I looked up and saw a local Baptist pastor walk in the door. I must confess that my first though was, oh boy, I’m in trouble. I knew this brother to be a genuine man of God, nevertheless I was concerned about how a fundamental, no nonsense Baptist might take all these goings on. Besides, I didn’t have any explanations to offer.

(Notice again the instinctive hesitancy of the radio announcer, although he was accepting it, he still lacked confident assurance in what was happening. It was happening without either his approval or control.)

I walked up to greet him; he just silently surveyed the room and with a tone of voice just above a whisper said, "This is God. For years I have been praying for revival, This is God."

(No Bible evidence, no careful weighing and testing of spirits, just "This is God.")

Within minutes more local pastors began to arrive, Lutheran, independent, Assembly of God. Word of what was happening spread like wildfire. As the pastors arrived, they were cautious at first, but within just minutes they would often begin to flow in the same ministry. The crowd was growing and pastors began to lay hands on the seekers. Where once again the power of God would manifest and the seeker would often collapse to the ground. It did not seem to matter who did the praying. This was a nameless, faceless, spontaneous move of God. There were no stars, no leaders and frankly, there was no organization. It’s hard to plan for something you have no idea what might happen.

(A ‘nameless, faceless movement’, what a good description of the work of the three unclean spirits in the last days. All in together boys!)

Eventually, word of what was occurring reached Fred Grew, the Melbourne pastor who had brought Randy Clark to the station earlier that morning. He and Randy along with several other Melbourne pastors jumped in the car and headed down to ___ beach. At this point we started broadcasting live from the church. As the group from Melbourne arrived, more and more people began to show up asking for prayer. It seemed like there were always more than we could get to.

Amazingly unchurched, unsaved people were showing up. I got a fresh glimpse of the power of radio as person after person told us. "I’m not really part of any church." A few were sceptical at first and later found themselves kneeling in profound belief.

(Again notice that here are people that were NOT actively seeking the Lord, but were just taken over as it were, and brought to join the crowd, and a high amount were those who had been avoiding any kind of commitment to the Lord. This, as we said earlier allows Satan more control over them. Already living a sensualistic life, they can be easily influenced by the demons playing with humans’ feelings.)

Sometimes people would rise up only to frantically announce to us that they had been healed of some physical problem. One woman’s arthritic hands found relief. Neck pains, jaw problems, stomach disorders, and more, were all reported to us as healed.

We had received at least a dozen verified, credible, reliable comments from people who told us, that when they switched on the radio, they were suddenly, unexpectedly overwhelmed by the presence of God even when they didn’t hear us saying anything. Several told up that the manifest presence of God was so strong in their cars that they were unable to drive and were forced to go off the road.

This falling aspect of this manifestation was the most visible manifestation, but it was not falling that was important. What was important was the fact that people were raising up with more love for God in their hearts than ever before they were being changed. I’ve lost count of the numbers of people who told me of the change God worked in their lives.

(God does not work changes in our lives separate from our direct co-operation. If he was inclined to do such things, why would He not have done it in the beginning and have saved all this suffering from taking place? Wholesale healing is one of the signs of the miracle working power of demons the SOP specifically talks about.

Look at these other things, people forced to stop their cars, sensations occurring without anyone saying anything, brothers and sisters, God doesn’t work like this, he says "Let us reason together." Even at Pentecost the apostles preached a message, answered questions from the people and the people prayed and were baptized. There were no long lines of people coming to the apostles and them praying for them and touching them and they collapse! It didn’t say in Acts that 3,000 people were collapsed all over the temple floors!)

It’s hard to imagine the impact this had on our staff. It seems like God had almost given me a new staff composed entirely of men and women with tremendous zeal for God. What is occurring in our local churches is even more amazing. My phone is ringing with the calls of excited pastors. At least a dozen area churches from completely different ends of the theological spectrum are already experiencing this powerful movement in their church.

The leaders of many, many local fellowships have been visiting these churches to check it out and they too are being touched to take it back with them. It’s almost like a tidal wave has hit this area of Florida.

(Does truth have any opposite ends? No, truth is truth; an opposite end from truth would have to be error, right? So it didn’t matter whether they believe truth or error, it’s all the same to the frog spirits. Excitement, ecumenism, a throwing away, not just of doctrinal differences, but also of doctrines altogether, for the sake of a physical, sensational experience.

God is practical and realistic; when Jesus performed a miracle it was always a real answer to a real problem. What real benefit for all the real problems of all those people that showed up, was provided by their collapsing on the floor for various periods of time, while demon spirits played with their minds? These people had received no message or instruction in righteousness. They weren’t even given a Bible to take home and study.)

If you are sceptical, I understand and forgive you. I might have thrown a letter like this one away just a few days ago. I share this only to try and offer a faithful rendition of what really has happened. I only ask that you remain open to whatever God wants to accomplish through you.

Christian history is full of accounts of those times when God elected to visit His people. When He has, entire nations have sometimes been affected. I believe you will agree. Our nation is ripe for such a revival. For such a time as this, let us look to God with expectancy.

With warm regards, I am sincerely yours

John Hamilton general manager

(I am not sure where this man gets his books on Christian history that are ‘full’ of such going’s on, but I have not seen them. I have however, seen the prophetic descriptions of just such goings on in warnings about the frog-spirits of the final deception.

People are being fooled, because they have an idea that in view of the terrible worldliness and their belief in the millennium, when all are supposed to be converted, there must be some revival coming, and God will force His way into the life of the nation and just take over. God does not do this sort of thing; the only party-crashing spirit the Bible talks about is Satan.)
