"My message to you is: No longer consent to listen
without protest to the perversion of truth." Selected Messages Book
1, Pg. 196
Our culture today is permeated through and through
with the philosophy of spiritualism and most of us are not aware of it
at all. It has come down though educational systems of the world as they
cherish the philosophy of the Greek spiritualists. It has come down
through the ancient Gnostics of the first centuries after Christ as they
strove to unite precepts of the Babylonian Mystery religion with
Christianity. It has come to us magnified and blessed by the unholy
apostate religion of the Dark Ages.
But most of all, it has been exalted and heralded as
wonderful scientific achievement in psychology and the so-called ‘mind
sciences’. I once presented to a group of conservative SDA Christians,
some information about the demonic deceptions everywhere apparent in our
modern world today. They expressed no concern, telling me they felt
certain that they could never be fooled by any of ‘that stuff’. I am not
so sure— there are several so called ‘scientific theories’ that have
crept into our very churches that have their origins in pagan sorcery!
The theories of modern psychology are nearly all
based on pagan concepts not in harmony with the Bible although some
so-called "Christian psychologists" stretch and twist certain texts to
try and make these false concepts acceptable to Christians. What are the
sources of the "scientific knowledge" people spend years in the
universities learning? Well, I’m sure you say that it comes from careful
scientific studies that prove it to be true. No—it doesn’t!
Freud, the father of modern psychiatry, was himself a
certified neurotic. He developed his theories in an effort to cure his
own neurosis but failed, nevertheless, lots of intelligent people think
his ideas can help them with theirs. He was strongly spiritualistic.
Freud stated that anyone who believed in God was insane!
Jean Martin Charcot (1825-1893) was a leading French
hypnotist of a century ago. Alfred Binet and Sigmund Freud were two of
his famous students. Freud developed his early theories by studying
people who were hypnotized. In this way, he could receive information
directly from spirit guides; the information that later formed his
theories which are today called ‘Freudian psychology.’
Today, hypnosis is used in hospitals for major
surgery, in dental offices during drilling and pulling of teeth, and by
educational counselors, industrial specialists, and family workers.
Hypnosis seems to be reaching out into nearly every sector of society.
And now it is coming into the churches, and even into our own
denomination.
Jung, who was once Freud's colleague, got his insight
from a spirit guide named ‘Philemon’, who appeared to him as a wise old
man, with a white beard and the horns of a bull and wings of a
kingfisher. Of course he didn’t believe this was a spirit, mind you, he
said it was something from the ‘collective unconsciousness’. He gathered
many of his concepts from the ‘Tibetan Book of the Dead’. He had so much
contact with the spirit world that he once wrote a work called—‘Seven
Sermons to the Dead’, which he felt was dictated to him by them. His
father-in-law, a Protestant minister, talked to his deceased wife every
day. (see ‘The Psychological Seduction of Christianity.’ Dave Hunt, and
PsychoHeresy, Ch. 2, Martin and Deidre Bobgan.)
Adams reminds us that Freud called himself "a
completely godless Jew" and a "hopeless pagan." Jay E. Adams, ‘Competent
to Counsel’ p. 16
A spirit that called itself, Djwal Khul, dictated
many books through a lady medium named Alice Bailey. She was called high
priestess of the New Age. Among her books was one called "Education in
the New Age". Her teachings are behind Dr. Roberto Assagioli, who worked
with her in Europe, he is the developer of the theory of
psycho-synthesis and the source of the theoretical model widely used in
schools. The purpose being to obey the spirit D.K. and "take it back to
the children."
Two well known self-help teachers get their input
from spirit guides, one a rabbit named ‘Corky’ and a famous oncologist
and surgeon consults with ‘George’ a bearded long-haired man wearing a
flowing white gown and a skullcap. Children are being trained from
kindergarten to seek for ‘inner guides’. A few years back a whole set of
‘biographical’ books for children about the lives of famous people, was
careful to weave an ‘imaginary friend’ into each story, making it seem
responsible for the person’s success.
Helen Schucman wrote "Course in Miracles", widely
acclaimed in many churches today, from a spirit who called itself Jesus,
and began ordering her one day, "This is a course in miracles, take it
down." She tells us on her website that the main purpose of her work is
to "provide a way in which some people will be able to find their own
Internal Teacher."
From Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers, to popular
channels like Marilyn Ferguson, theories, teaching methods, self help
techniques, and therapies are pouring out upon the world, either
directly channelled from demon spirits, or from persons influenced by
theories that were. And they call this occult garbage, ‘science’!
Do we really think that we can incorporate ideas and
philosophies from such sources and make them useful in the Christian
life?? But we are attempting that very thing with counselling
techniques, ’Four Personality Types’ seminars, Self Esteem enhancement
programs, Grief seminars, and so on ad-nauseum.
In the second year of the esteemed periodical
‘Psychology Today’ (1969), they state one of their missions to help man
"face our inner experiences without the guidance of traditional dogmas,
ritual, or patriarchal authority—the foundation stones of
Judeo-Christian religious experience. Left without collectively
sanctioned God-values and moral absolutes, we are compelled to erect our
own morality, arrive at our own faith and belief, and discover our own
meaning to our own existence."
Psychology has clearly no love for Christianity! Sad
to say, the feeling is not mutual. The New Age, Psychology,
pseudo-scientific jargon is in our books, sermons, magazines, and
conversations, and we are swallowing it hook, line and sinker! What is
the result? A subtle turning away from God to the theories of man, an
excusing of sin and exalting of self, a weakening faith and increased
dependence upon human support amongst Christians, and a booming
counselling business carried on by church pastors and other so-called
experts who point people to man made theories and so the cycle goes on.
Take a look at one theory being taught among us as
fact—the Right-brain, Left-brain theory. Every-one knows that is
scientific fact—right?—every-one that is except the scientists whose
work the theory was developed from—to them the whole notion that the
brain’s two hemispheres are split into two tidy sections—one the center
of creativity, the other logical thinking—is simplistic and wrongheaded.
It is used as a ‘Trojan Horse’ to bring occult, spiritualistic
techniques such as visualization, meditation, imaging and eastern
mysticism into education programs on the grounds that these develop the
right side of the brain. But what DO the scientist who did the studies
say?
"Even on the most trivial tasks our studies showed
that everything in the brain was in flux—both sides, the front and back,
the top and bottom. It was tremendously complicated. To think that
you could reduce this to a simple left-right dichotomy would be
misleading and oversimplified." John Mazziotta quoted by Kevin
McKean, Discover, 1985, p. 38.
"The two-brain myth was founded on an erroneous
premise: that since each hemisphere was specialized, each must
function as an independent brain. But in fact, just the opposite is
true. To the extent that regions are differentiated in the brain, they
must integrate their activities. Indeed, it is precisely that
integration that gives rise to behavior and mental processes greater
than and different from each region’s contribution. Thus, since the
central premise of the mythmakers is wrong, so are all the inferences
derived from it." Jerre Levy, "Right Brain, Left Brain: Fact and
Fiction." Psychology Today, May 1985, p. 43.
This concept is the source of a lot of social
confusion and has resulted in the strengthening of the feminist movement
(which is also highly lesbian) and has contributed highly to the
breakdown of family structure in these last days. No error is innocent!
Many popular books have been poured out in the recent
years promoting, not just female equality, but female superiority. These
books are eagerly snapped up by ‘restless modern Eves’ and the concepts
they put forth, although only richly embroidered speculation, are being
accepted as fact. This has done much harm in our society at large!
Remember that Satan seeks to destroy the gifts of God to man and the
family structure is one of those precious gifts.
This article will be much too long if I show too many
examples but look at one of the claims these promoters of this
‘split-brain’ theory make in regard to male and female:
"The female brain is a brain that’s not damaged
during fetal development as the male brain is. . . . The damage occurs
to the male brain during the sixteenth to the twenty-sixth week of fetal
development. At that time a chemical bath is given to the left
hemisphere and the connecting link between the two hemispheres that
reduces the size and number of transmission passages that exist there
for what’s called lateral transmission. So males simply can’t talk to
themselves across the hemispheres in a way that a woman does." Donald
Joy interview, "The Innate Differences between Males and Females," Focus
on the Family Radio Broadcast, CS-099, 1984, 1986.
Now brothers and sisters, what does this say about
God? That He would have designed the very sex that He declared are to
lead out and head up the family, the church and society, and yet
arranged that their brains are damaged in utero, while a female is not?
Brothers and sisters, this makes the Creator out to be an idiot! But
remember—the ones that put forth these books believe in evolution and
spiritualism. Many of these leading feminists are lesbians and many are
witches and ‘goddess’ worshippers. Satan is having a field-day with
these feminist speculations.
"Some feminists seem bent on proving that there are
no differences. And, other popularizers of pseudoscience, such as
Smalley, Trent, Joy, Wright, and Dobson, seem bent on propagating
differences that have not been proven. Underlying their unjustifiable
conclusions seems to be a female brain superiority, which certainly
appeals to the women who follow them. While the research seems to
support some differences, they are not the ones Smalley, Trent,
Joy, Wright, and Dobson are promoting. Notice our expression "research
seems." Whenever individuals speak with the certainty of these men in
such an uncertain area, caveat emptor! (Buyer, beware!)"
Excerpted from the now out-of-print book Prophets of PsychoHeresy II by
Martin and Deidre Bobgan.
And what about the personality types? Surely that is
scientific fact? No—wrong again. Just a modernized version of the Hindu
concept of the four powers of nature, fire, air, water, and so on, and
the ideas of astrology which came down to us from medieval times. It is
interesting that these theories fell out of vogue during the reformation
era, when men’s eyes were turned to the sacred Word of God, and the fact
that it is springing into popularity again may tell us something about
our distance from God’s true Word.
They give a convenient Excuse for Behaviour and often
all those who study this stuff, pigeonhole themselves in a nice spot
that makes them feel not too bad at all as they compare themselves among
themselves. The so-called improvements they claim to give to family
understanding, too often degenerate into a form of psychological name
calling. It is also interesting that books that promote this information
are claiming that the personality types are beyond our control, but at
the same time they are telling you how to change them. Sort of like
Satan first saying we can’t know for sure what God means and then giving
Eve some inside info on God’s very thoughts.
"Another reason for the ‘four temperaments’
popularity may be their fleshly appeal. Those who encourage Christians
to utilize the four temperaments for spiritual growth consistently warn
against using temperament weaknesses as excuses for behavior.
Unfortunately, that is a great temptation—to move from "understanding"
why I act a certain way to "excusing" sinful behavior because of "my
temperament." Whenever sinful behavior is relabeled "weaknesses," there
is a dwindling sense of responsibility and a gnawing sense of being
trapped in helplessness. Once resigned to one’s weakness, one may
attempt to "make up" for that "weakness" by developing and focusing on
the so-called "strengths" of the particular temperament one thinks he
has." Four Temperaments, Astrology and Personality Testing Chapter
One, Martin and Deidre Bobgan.
"The four temperaments and other personality type
systems did not originate from Scripture. They are part of that
philosophical/psychological pool of man-made systems and personal
opinions, which attempt to explain the nature of man and present methods
for change. Christian authors promoting the four temperaments and
similar typologies base their ideas on unproven psychological theories
and subjective observations which are based on neither the rigors of
scientific investigation nor the rigors of exegetical Bible study."

One of the most amazing ideas to catch on in
Christian circles, amazing because it is the dead-opposite of the
teaching of Christ in the Bible and all through the Spirit of Prophecy,
is that our emotions have to be expressed, and that to control them is
to cause ourselves some kind of terrible damage. Again, what does this
say about God; in that He would make us in a way that we have to do this
and then forbid it to be done?! Again the tempters voice echoes with a
kind of leer—"Yea, hath God said?"
"Prior to the last twenty-five years, people were
encouraged to use self-control. The advice and encouragement was for
internalizing rather than externalizing anger. Now, however, everyone
seems bent on self-expression rather than self-restraint. And,
psychologists have supplied reasons, justifications, and just plain
excuses for letting it all hang out. One of the most prevalent reasons
they give is that it is good for you. Thus, our society has moved from
an era of restraint to one of release under the rubric of health and
personal happiness." Prophets of Psychoheresy I by Martin & Deidre
Bobgan 1989 Chapter 17.
But what does true research actually show?
"The psychological rationale for ventilating anger
does not stand up under experimental scrutiny. The weight of the
evidence indicates precisely the opposite: Expressing anger makes you
angrier, solidifies an angry attitude, and establishes a hostile habit."
Tavris, "Anger Diffused," Psychology Today, November 1982, p. 33.
Christian friend, everything necessary for our
salvation is to be found in the Word of God, the precious Bible, and
God’s messenger to His last day people has given a lot of additional
light to us. Why do we have to search the dried and cracked cisterns of
the world for a drop of moisture when fountains of living water flow for
us? Why do we gather up the teachings of infidels and atheists and their
demon friends and present them to people as truth, when they are denied
by the only truth we can really count on, the Bible?
"The great men of earth will then understand that
they have surrendered mind and heart to ensnaring philosophy which
pleased the carnal heart. Hope and grace and every inducement had been
held out by One who loved them, and gave his life for them, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life,
but they refused the love of God. Their lofty opinions, their human
reasonings, were extolled; they declared themselves sufficient in
themselves to understand divine mysteries, and they thought their own
powers of discrimination were strong enough to discern truth for
themselves. They fell an easy prey to Satan's subtlety, for he presented
before them specious errors in human philosophy, which has an
infatuation for human minds. They turned from the Source of all wisdom,
and worshipped intellect. The message and the messengers of God were
criticized and discarded as beneath their human, lofty ideas. The
invitations of mercy were made a jest, and they denied the divinity of
Jesus Christ, and derided the idea of his pre-existence before he
assumed human nature. But the tattered shreds of human reasoning will be
found to be only as ropes of sand in the great day of God" Signs of
the Times.1895-03-07
Now let’s ask the Psychologists themselves what their
aim is—Author Mary Pride delved the early issues of the noted journal
Psychology Today, and here's what she found. In the second year of the
esteemed periodical (1969), she found them state one of their missions
to help man "face our inner experiences without the guidance of
traditional dogmas, ritual, or patriarchal authority—the foundation
stones of Judeo-Christian religious experience. Left without
collectively sanctioned God-values and moral absolutes, we are compelled
to erect our own morality, arrive at our own faith and belief, and
discover our own meaning to our own existence." There you have it from
the horse’s mouth as it were!
The Bible has proven itself true in many ways, it has
never failed us and never will—these theories cannot even be
substantiated. Throw them away, and seek the living Word for
psychological advice!
Nothing in this article discourages seeking Christian
counsel. The writings of Ellen White state that in a severe personal
crisis it is wise to seek guidance. (MCP 765) This is what she defines
as Christian Psychology. Such guidance should come from those of
maturity, experience, and a deep personal commitment to Christ.
Independent, immature, hasty, and emotional decisions can leave behind a
lifetime of damage. Wise counsel sought and accepted before making
important choices would have kept many people from a lifetime of
tragedy.
However, the fundamental difference between Christian
Counseling and Psychology is one of direction. Psychology looks within
for solutions: Christianity looks to HIM for solutions. This difference
in direction is the all-important determinant between Truth and
Error—between Heaven and Hell.
Ellen White predicted that near the close of time
personal counseling would go beyond constructive advice. A corrupt form
of Psychology would come into popular acceptance. On the surface it
would appear harmless and good. Underneath the veneer of healing, an
incredible harm would be done. She said that psychology would become
satanic in character. It would invade and corrupt the very work of God.
There are Seventh-day Adventists Psychiatrists who believe that religion
should not be brought into their practice. (See Spectrum, Vol. 17.
Number 3)
"Satan has come unperceived through these sciences
and has poisoned the minds of thousands and led them to Infidelity. He
is well pleased to have the knowledge of these sciences widespread. It
is a plan that he himself has laid, that he may gain access to minds and
influence them as he pleases. . , And while those devoted to these
sciences laud them to the heavens because of the great and good works,
they are cherishing and glorifying Satan. Through the channel of
phrenology, psychology, and mesmerism (hypnosis), he (Satan) comes more
directly to the people of this generation, and works with that power
which is to characterize his efforts near the close of probation." 2
Selected Messages 351 (Circa 1907)
WHEN DO THESE WARNINGS APPLY?
Ellen White is not specifically pointing at the
Psychology of her time. Her warnings point to the Psychology, which
would be practiced at the close of probation. This is obviously a
prediction—an end-time prophecy.
THE ESSENCE OF THE WARNING
In unmistakable words God has forbidden one human
mind to meddle around in the mind of another. This opens the door to
demonic deception. The Adventist church is in grave danger. The beliefs
and practices of the secular world are making inroads into our ministry.
It is standard practice today that our ministers, either become
psychologists or refer people to psychologists for solution to serious
problems. The warnings God gave through Ellen White indicate that
mind-sciences would corrupt the gospel of Christ as the source of peace
of mind. Many Adventist ministers now seek degrees in psychology to
enhance the influence of their personal ministry. It is in this area
that we must stand guard.
What legacy are we reaping from our love affair with
the spiritualist concepts of modern psychobabble? We have woman confused
on their roles; men who are taught to idolize their personal parts;
children who feel they must do their own thing; parents who are afraid
to train or instruct because they might do damage; people who believe
that children should be raised by psych-experts and not by parents;
youth fresh from college who feel that their degree gives them wisdom to
direct the lives of others; pastors who try to use Ericsonian hypnosis
to manipulate the laity; people whose only conversational ability
consists in discussing and analyzing their friends and family by the
latest psycho-fad; and all the while Satan is laughing at us, the Holy
Spirit is grieved and the angels of God are weeping.
